If you file your Company Tax Return and annual accounts using HMRC’s online filing service, it’s time to start planning for change.
From 31 March 2026, HMRC’s online service will close permanently. Until that date, you can continue to use it to file or amend your Company Tax Return with HMRC and submit accounts to Companies House. However, from 1 April 2026, all businesses will be required to use commercial software to file both annual accounts and Company Tax Returns.
Why is the service closing?
The current HMRC online service, mainly used by small businesses with simple tax affairs, no longer meets modern digital standards or recent updates to UK company law. Since its introduction in 2011, the market for commercial tax software has grown significantly. These platforms offer more advanced features, including:
- Better validation and accuracy checks
- Tax support and filing reminders
- Integrated submission to both HMRC and Companies House
What you need to do
We recommend planning ahead and switching to a suitable commercial software solution as soon as possible. The software you choose should allow you to file:
- Your CT600 form
- A full Corporation Tax computation
- Your company accounts
You can find a list of approved software providers for HMRC here https://www.gov.uk/file-your-company-annual-accounts
You will also need to ensure you have a method in place to file annual accounts with Companies House. A list of compatible software providers for Companies House is available here https://www.gov.uk/software-company-accounts
